Outdoor
Evening Sessions
Swimming costume: Individuals will need to
supply this.
Wetsuit (sleeveless): Wetsuits are buoyant and keep you
warm if you get completely soaked. If you are sure that you won't be
falling in, a wetsuit is not essential. The following clothing would be
suitable: Thermal vest; Light sweater; Tracksuit bottoms; Light
water-proof bottoms. The Club has a number of wetsuits available for
use.
Thin woollen sweater or warm fleece top (not cotton). Individuals will
need to supply this.
Wetsuit bootees or socks and trainers. Individuals will
need to supply this.
Water-poof Cagoule: Usually
referred to as a 'cag' this water-proof jacket is specially shaped to
allow you to paddle freely. The neck cuffs and waist band are
elasticated to help seal most of the water out. Cags are hard-wearing
and good value for money. They are essential in any but the hottest of
conditions to prevent loss of body heat from the effect of wind. The
Club has a number of cags available for use.
Spraydeck:The
spraydeck is an elasticated 'skirt' which prevents water from entering
the kayak through the cockpit area. In rough water it is an essential
item and in cold weather it helps keep you warm. A 'quick release'
strap must be fitted, and available, in case of emergency. There are
spraydecks to fit all the Club Kayaks.
Helmet: Helmets must be worn
for white water, polo or surfing. Choose one which can be adjusted to
fit your head perfectly and has a strong chin strap. During the early
stages of learning, you may be asked to wear one. the Club has a
selection of helmets.
Buoyancy Aid:A buoyancy aid should
be worn for every canoeing activity, regardless of how well you can
swim. It will keep you afloat in the event of a capsize and will allow
you to use a normal swimming action to help yourself. No one has
drowned from a canoe close to the bank on simple water, whilst wearing
a buoyancy aid. The Club has a selection of buoyancy aids available for
use.
What else should I
bring with me to the Outdoor Evening Sessions?
Dry Clothing (warm): To
change into at the end of the evening. Remember a jacket and don't
forget a towel!
A Drink: Always a good idea. This should be suitable for
the conditions (eg warm drink if a cold day - even in summer!)
Food: Something to eat at the end is sometimes good.
Indoor Evening Sessions
Just bring what you
would wear in the swimming pool.
